Intarsia - Tips & Tricks

Many veneers may be laid on top of each other if average accuracy is sufficient. If large area intarsia are to be produced, e.g. for furniture, then the veneers must first be trimmed with a carpet knife and then joined using adhesive tape.

Correction of the cutting width is necessary for very accurate work. When the parts are laid inside each other, the cutting width, which corresponds approximately to the width of the laser beam in the focus, will be missing. However, the cutting width depends essentially on the thickness of the workpiece and the material. There are various different ways of correcting this cutting width. It is possible to define an outline contour in CorelDraw. If a circular disk is defined with an outline contour, the cut diameter will be bigger. The reference contour may be used for cutting the corresponding counterpart (hole).

Professional CAD/CAM programs offer built-in functions for beam correction. These may be used to produce the most accurate intarsia possible. Trotec offers a professional software package (APS) for its systems with a postprocessor optimized for the Trotec laser systems.
