CO2 laser marking removes material directly from the plastic to offer an engraved look, which can be used to achieve a colored effect, particularly when using 2-ply plastics. When using 1-ply materials, laser marking creates a "relief" effect, which is a good choice for cases in which the marking is meant to be subtle, yet still clearly visible.

Nd:Yag laser solutions are specifically used to create a color change without removing material. Depending on the type of plastic used, the marking can vary from white to black. The contrast can be increased by adding suitable additives. Nd:YAG solutions
Both CO2 and Nd:Yag lasers can also be used to provoke the foaming of a polymer - the laser-processed area increases its volume which results in a raised marking.
